In earlier versions of Exchange, you had to configure TLS manually and install a certificate for TLS to use before servers could encrypt traffic. Exchange 2010 makes the process much easier by enabling TLS by default and automatically securing the communication that flows between hub transport servers with TLS using either the self-signed certificate that Exchange servers generate or the certificate that you install for this purpose. All inbound SMTP sessions can be encrypted and Exchange 2010 will attempt to encrypt all remote sessions, including those to other messaging systems. The existence of self-signed certificates is sufficient to allow Exchange 2010 to negotiate an encrypted connection with other SMTP servers that support a feature called opportunistic TLS.
