You might have already discovered a Word feature that gives you a quick-look outline in a side panel along the left edge of your work area. Word s Document Map, shown in Figure 10-1, Document creates a listing of headings in your document that are linked to the document so that you Map can use the Document Map to move easily from one part of the document to another. To dis play the Document Map, click the Document Map button on the Standard toolbar or choose View, Document Map.

Design your applications to make parallel calls to network services during initialization. Calls to network services that can run parallel during initialization, can take advantage of asynchronous functionality provided by the service proxies. This helps free the current executing thread and calls services concurrently to get tasks done. Use NGEN.exe to compile and experiment with NGen and non-NGen assemblies, and determine which saves the largest number of working set pages. NGEN.exe, which ships with the .NET Framework, is used to pre-compile an assembly to create a native image that is then stored in a special part of the global assembly cache, ready for the next time it is required by an application. Creating a native image of an assembly allows the assembly to load and execute faster because the CLR does not need to dynamically generate the code and data structures contained in the assembly. Why have a Document Map and an outlining feature First, the Document Map is a handy tool when you want to do things like check the wording of a topic, make sure the text you ve added fits the heading, and see at a glance that you ve covered all the topics you intended to cover. What you can t do in Document Map view is what makes Word s outline capabilities necessary: you can t change the heading levels of text, reorganize parts, or affect the table of contents in any way. For major structuring changes, text reorganizations, heading modifications, and more, you ll want to work in Outline view. For simple, lay-of-the-land operations, the Document Map will give you a clear picture of your document in a form that you can access and navigate quickly.

Whether you re starting a document from scratch or you re working with an existing one, with text and headings already entered and formatted, you can use outlines to your benefit. To display Outline view, click the Outline View button to the left of the horizontal scroll bar, at the bottom of the page.
