Figure 5-10: Network configuration used in the example After typing wwwciscocom in the address bar, my PC must first resolve this name to an IP address To perform this task, it needs to communicate with my DNS server To perform this task, it needs to resolve the IP address of my DNS server into a MAC address ARP is used to formulate a request in the form of a broadcast The DNS server, noticing its IP address in the ARP broadcast, replies with its MAC address My PC adds the DNS server's MAC and IP addresses into the ARP table, and it sends out a DNS request for the IP address for wwwciscocom My DNS server looks in its zone files and determines that it is not authoritative for the ciscocom domain It then begins the recursive lookup process by asking the root servers where the ciscocom DNS server can be found The root servers respond, and my DNS server eventually locates the authoritative server My DNS server then asks what the IP address for the host www in the domain ciscocom is The Cisco DNS server responds, and my DNS server finally formulates an answer to my initial question: "What is the IP address for wwwciscocom " At this point, my PC recognizes that the IP address for wwwciscocom is not in the same network of which it is a part (by using a process called ANDing, which is described in 6) So, rather than formulating an ARP request (because ARP is broadcast and it will not pass through the router), my PC looks in its routing table for the best path to 19813321925 The best path, in this case, is the default gateway (explained further in 6), so my PC sends the packet to my router (19216811) This packet is the first part of the TCP three-way handshake that has to take place before my PC can communicate with the web server using HTTP (because HTTP relies on TCP) This packet contains the SYN flag to let the web server know that this is the start of a new session The web server responds with a packet with its own SYN bit set, as well as the ACK bit set to acknowledge my SYN transmission This completes step two of the handshake To complete the handshake, my PC sends a packet with an ACK for the web server's SYN At this point, my PC formulates the HTTP request, and the web server responds by retrieving, fragmenting, and sending the web page to my PC If any errors occur, the machines reduce the window size appropriately and retransmit If no errors occur, the window size grows incrementally until it reaches its maximum size.
