The first is to utilize for the operating system a startup switch that changes the memory allocation model for the operating system as a whole so that 3GB of memory becomes addressable for usermode applications and 1GB is reserved for the operating system kernel (by default, the split is even at 2GB of virtual memory each). This is achieved by editing the startup file boot.ini, which is located at the root of the Windows server c: drive and adding /3 GB to the end of the line in the [operating systems] section that boots Windows; usually there is only one such line.
