Instead of working with a named single column, the COLUMNS_UPDATED() function can work with multiple columns. It does this through the use of bit flags rather than naming columns. There are 8 bits in a byte, and a bit can be either off (a value of 0) or on (a value of 1). COLUMNS_UPDATED() checks the bits of a single byte, which is provided by SQL Server, to see whether a column has been updated. It can do this by correlating a bit with a column in the underlying table. So to clarify, the TransactionDetails.Transactions table has nine columns. The first column, TransactionId, would relate to the first bit within the byte. The Amount column is the fifth column and therefore would relate to the fifth bit within the byte. If the first bit is on (a value of 1), the TransactionId column has been updated.
