Exchange 2007 AD sites, AD site connectors, Hub Transport roles, send connectors, receive connectors Many concepts in Exchange 2007 are reminiscent of the early days of Exchange For example, Exchange has gone back to sites as routing boundaries, but this time they are AD sites not Exchange sites Another reflection of the past is that up to Exchange 55, SMTP only ran on the server where the Internet Mail Service was installed In Exchange 2007, SMTP only runs on the transport server roles The purpose of Exchange sites and routing groups was to group together Exchange servers that existed on one or more LANs and that were interconnected with highbandwidth, reliable connections If Exchange servers were separated by low-bandwidth WAN connections, the servers were placed in separate sites or routing groups to prevent mail from flowing over the WAN The site connectors and routing group connectors were configured to allow mail to flow between the sites or routing groups, and could be configured by administrators to limit the size and type of messages as well as the time of day that the connector would run Both sites and routing groups are arbitrary constraints that do not change the nature of the actual data network packet flow Careful planning was necessary to make sure that the settings in Exchange were congruent with the routing at the data network level Improperly configuring a site or routing group and the associated connectors could prevent mail flow even if the data network was fine What was discovered in Exchange 2000/2003 was that all the work had already been done with Active Directory sites when AD was deployed Turns out adding routing groups was a redundant, superfluous administrative task So in Exchange Server 2007 routing groups no longer exist Exchange 2007 now uses AD sites instead.

Now that Exchange sites and routing groups are gone and there are no more Exchange site or routing group connectors to configure, how does mail get from point A to point B There are default behaviors (called rules for the sake of this discussion) that the Exchange 2007 servers follow when transporting mail though the pipeline Reviewing these rules will help you understand how Exchange servers figure out how to get mail from point A to point B in Exchange Server 2007

The path a message takes on the network should be determined by the routes on the data network, not Exchange All messages will be sent directly to the destination server unless that server is unavailable

FIGURE 9-9

This rule defines the relationship between the hub and the mailbox servers The Hub Transport server only delivers mail to mailbox servers that happen to be in the same Active Directory site as the Hub Conversely, the mailbox server will only submit mail to Hub Transport servers in the same AD site

Once a path has been used between two Exchange Server 2007 machines, they will continue to use that path unless it becomes unavailable This is called deterministic routing and it replaces Link State information used in previous versions of Exchange

As soon as a Hub Transport role is added to the organization, default connectors will be established When two or more transport servers exist in the organization, both receive and send connectors will exist Even when transport servers exist in separate AD sites, default connectors will be created to make sure that mail items can flow anywhere in the organization Note that if only one AD site exists, rule 2 takes care of mail flow

It s a good practice to keep at least one backup of each of these system databases However, sometimes additional backups should be made of specific system databases Table 11-8 outlines when each of the databases should be backed up The master is the most critical system database If it is corrupt, a server instance may not be able to start However, if the master database is damaged while the instance is running, you may be able to restore the master

FIGURE 9-12

When routing information is required to determine the best path, Exchange 2007 servers will refer to the Active Directory site topology It is important to note that this is done if a direct path to the target server is not available
