Glycolysis is a metabolic pathway that cleaves glucose into two molecules of pyruvate or lactate. During glycolysis, some of the energy in the glucose molecule is converted into ATP. Although glycolysis to pyruvate is an oxidative process, it is not dependent on molecular oxygen. By contrast, the subsequent fate of pyruvate depends on the presence of both mitochondria and sufficient oxygen. In the presence of oxygen, the product of glycolysis is pyruvate, which is further oxidized by the pyruvate dehydrogenase enzyme complex and the dehydrogenases of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. In the absence of sufficient oxygen, or in red blood cells, where mitochondria are absent, lactate is the final product of glycolysis and there is no net oxidation. Glycolysis is not only the major pathway for oxidizing glucose, but also the main pathway for metabolizing other dietary sugars, such as galactose and fructose. Once glucose has been trapped inside a cell in the form of glucose 6-phosphate, there may be as many as three metabolic options available for the glucose moiety (Fig. 4-1). In a hepatocyte, for example, glucose can be oxidized via glycolysis for the primary purpose of ATP production, stored as glycogen, or oxidized in the pentose phosphate pathway to generate NADPH and ribose for nucleic acid synthesis. Red blood cells, on the other hand, cannot synthesize glycogen; they can, however, metabolize glucose through the pentose phosphate pathway or through glycolysis.

Conventional networks, including the Internet, are designed to provide communication among devices The same networks can be used to support the concept of grid computing, in which the unused processing cycles of all computers in a given network can be harnessed to create powerful computing capabilities Grid computing is already in limited use, and most of the current grid applications are in areas that formerly would have required supercomputers The grid does the computing at a much lower cost A well-known grid-computing project is the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) @Home project In this project, PC users worldwide donate unused processor cycles to help the search for signs of extraterrestrial life by analyzing signals coming from outer space The project relies on individual volunteers to allow the project to harness the unused processing power of the users computers This method saves the project both money and resources.

A major commercial application of grid computing in the consumer market is Sony s attempt to link online thousands of Sony video-game consoles For details see Lohr (2003) As discussed in 1, with pervasive computing we envision a future in which computation becomes part of the environment Computation will be embedded in things, not in computers Relentless progress in semiconductor technology, low-power design, and wireless technology will make embedded computation less and less obtrusive Pervasive computing is closely related with IT support systems, especially intelligent systems and DSS For more details about pervasive computing, see 6 Web services are self-contained, self-describing business and consumer modular applications, delivered over the Internet, that users can select and combine through almost any device, ranging from personal computers to mobile phones.

By using a set of shared protocols and standards, these applications permit disparate systems to talk with one another that is, to share data and services without requiring human beings to translate the conversation The result promises to be on-the- y and in real-time links among the online processes of.

By providing centralized file servers, an organization can efficiently share information and applications with people within the organization, with customers, or with anyone around the world. Several different technologies are available for making your Linux computer into a file-serving powerhouse. The Network File System (NFS) protocol was one of the first file server technologies available. It is particularly well suited for sharing file systems among Linux and other UNIX systems. NFS uses standard mount and umount commands to connect file systems to the directory structures of client computers. The Samba software package that comes with many Linux distributions (or can be easily installed if it doesn t) contains protocols and utilities for sharing files and printers among Windows and OS/2 operating systems. It uses SMB protocols that are included with all Microsoft Windows systems and therefore provides a convenient method of sharing resources on LANs containing many Windows systems.
