When a node A meets another node B, they perform a bundle exchange through a number of steps First, node A gives to node B a list of the bundles that node A carries with their destinations Each bundle also contains a likelihood of delivery by node A Node A receives the same list from B and calculates the likelihood of delivering B s bundles Node A now sorts the combined lists by the likelihood of delivery, removes node A s own bundles, and also deletes bundles that B has a higher likelihood of delivering Node A then selects the top n bundles remaining, and it requests from B all the bundles (up to n) that node A does not already have.

Every system within the universe has a purpose or mission. In other words, every system has a reason for its existence relative to other systems. Most human-made systems are directed toward contributing to and achieving the owner organization s roles, missions, and objectives. Each system performs a role within the owner system s overall role. This section introduces the concept of system roles and stakeholders. We explore the roles of organizations that employ systems, products, and services and how physical systems namely assets are acquired to perform in support of organizational roles, missions, and objectives. The success of man-made systems in achieving success within an organization is determined by HOW WELL the system is speci ed, designed, developed, integrated, veri ed, validated, operated, and supported. This requires that humans, either directly or indirectly, that a vested interest in the operational effectiveness of the mission results, performance achieved, and outcome of the system s mission and objectives. We refer to these individuals as the system stakeholders. We conclude this chapter by identifying the primary system stakeholder roles and their contributions, sometimes positive sometimes negative to system mission performance and outcomes.

They proposed four types of drop strategies for deciding which bundles to exchange when two nodes meet and simulation results show that Drop-Oldest (DOA) and Drop-Least-Encountered (DLE) yielded the best performance The encounter value is an estimation of meeting likelihood of two given nodes The DLE algorithm has peers keep track of the other peers they meet regularly over time Peers initialize their likelihood of delivery a bundle to a moving peer as 0 When peer A meets another peer B, the former sets the likelihood of delivering bundles to B as 1 These values degrade over time, such that they are reinforced only.

End User An individual or organization that bene ts directly from the outcome or results of a system, product, or service. Stakeholder An individual or organization that has a vested interest (e.g., friendly, competitive, or adversarial) in the outcome produced by a system in performing its assigned mission. System User An individual or organization that employs a system, product, or service or their by-products for purposes of accomplishing a mission-oriented objective or task. For example, a city transportation system employs bus drivers and buses to transport people from one location to another. The bus drivers and passengers are categorized as users.

if A and B meet periodically. More speci cally, the DLE algorithm calculates the likelihood of delivery as follows: Mt (A, C) Mt+1 (A, C) = Mt (A, C) + 1 Mt (A, C) + Mt (B, C) if none are co-located if B = C for all C = B /

Organizational systems perform roles that re ect their chartered missions and objectives within their business domains. Table 5.1 provides examples of system roles and missions.

Every man-made system performs mission-oriented operations and tasks intended to accomplish speci c performance-based objectives and outcomes to support their customers, the Users and stakeholders. The conduct of these missions requires two types of operational roles: mission system and support system.
