A link with a higher handshake effectiveness of the MAC protocol is always favored, without considering the contention present over the link. Also, since the ETX uses probe broadcast packets to inform the neighbors about their reception, the metric does not measure the link quality of the actual packets which are usually larger and transmitted at a higher data rate. While transmitting control packets of different lengths will overcome the problem, this leads to an added control overhead. Also, the estimation of the route quality based on summing the ETX of the links is a simple metric which does not account for the bottleneck links.
