When you are using database mirroring, it is important to understand what happens in different failure scenarios so you are not surprised by unexpected behavior. This is especially true when using the automatic failover capabilities of high-safety mode. Depending on the location of your witness server, a simple network error could cause an automatic failover to the mirror server from a perfectly functioning principal server. In order to avoid unanticipated failovers and take the proper actions when a failover occurs, it is important to understand how a server failure, or network failure for that matter, affects the rest of the servers participating in a database mirroring session. Let s look at five different failure scenarios and discuss how each scenario affects the availability of the data.

Never update or change objects such as the triggers configured during replication unless directed to by Microsoft. I know many people out there do it, but you will not only be in an unsupported position if you need support, you will also need to maintain whatever customizations you deploy. If replication doesn t do what you want, maybe it is the wrong technology for you. Think about it.

Note that the finally block is always executed at the end of the try block, whether or not there is an exception. This is true even if there is a return or break statement that might ostensibly circumvent this mechanism. In fact, the finally is always executed. You might be tempted to use the finally statement to control the deallocation of unmanaged resources or other similar applications, but there are better ways to do this, ranging from the using statement in C# to the destructor, finalizer, or dispose paradigms in .NET and C++. We will cover this in detail in 20.

Snapshot replication completely refreshes the data of the Subscriber each time a push or pull occurs (according to the subscription that is configured). If any data is updated at the Subscriber, it will be completely overwritten when the snapshot is republished to the Subscriber. Snapshot replication is not for those who need to update data at the Subscriber. Snapshot replication is generally helpful where data changes infrequently, and it is easier to refresh everything instead of just a portion of it. A good example of the use of snapshot replication is a catalog for an online e-commerce site. Since this database is read-only, you could do a full refresh at a scheduled time each day across all instances. Arguably the most important use of snapshot replication is that in many cases, it is used to seed the other forms of replication via the initial snapshot. While there are other methods by which this can be achieved in some cases (described later in the section Step 3: Subscribing to the Publication), even if you are using merge or transactional replication, chances are you may use snapshot replication in some way. When it comes to availability, snapshot replication will most likely not be appropriate unless you have a small dataset and refresh frequently enough to meet your SLAs. Since each push and pull is a one off, there is a lot of autonomy on both sides and there could be a large delta between the Publisher and the Subscriber. The whole goal of availability is to have small deltas of difference. Keep in mind that pushing a snapshot of an entire published database will put quite a resource hit on both Publisher and Subscriber and may take some time to complete. Figure 12-1 shows the architecture for snapshot replication.

Merge replication is slightly different from snapshot After the initial subscription is in place, you can send only the changes made at a scheduled interval In this way, it is not unlike a differential backup or applying incremental transaction logs However, one main difference over any other form of SQL Server availability is that with merge replication, you do have the possibility of updating Subscribers, which can send changed data back to the Publisher Merge replication works when a transaction occurs at the Publisher or Subscriber; that change is written to change tracking tables The Merge Agent checks those change tracking tables and writes the changes to the distribution database where the data is then possibly sent out (depending on how merge replication is configured) It is not a requirement of deploying merge replication that the Subscribers have the ability to update data.

Function-try blocks are features unique to C++ that allow you to catch any exception that occurs within the entire body of a function. This feature may seem insignificant until you realize that it allows you to catch exceptions within the base class constructor during construction of a derived class.
