Before you installed the cluster, you verified that each node could ping each IP address configured on the other nodes. Now that the server cluster is fully configured, you must verify its connectivity: 1. Open a command window. 2. From every node in the cluster, ping the server cluster IP address. A successful result should be similar to the one shown in Figure 5-124.

Since this is C++, it almost goes without saying that all of these can be overloaded again locally, for example: #include <iostream> using namespace std; namespace R { ostream& endl ( ostream& os ) { ::operator<<(os, " <END> "); ::endl(os); return os; } ostream& operator<< (ostream& os, const char* str ) { ::operator<<(os, " -> "); ::operator<<(os, str); ::operator<<(os, " <- "); return os; } static int Test() { cout << "Hello" << endl; return 0; } }; int main() { R::Test(); } Again, after compiling and executing, we get C:\>cl /nologo /EHsc test.cpp C:\>test -> Hello <- <END>

5. From a server or computer outside the cluster nodes, ping the server cluster IP name to ensure that it can be reached from computers that are not part of the cluster. 6. From Cluster Administrator on every node, connect to the server cluster you configured.

You can configure database mirroring to run in one of three operating modes. You should be aware of the pros and cons that come along with each operating mode when choosing which mode is best for your environment. Figure 2-1 shows each of these modes as they appear on the Mirroring page of the Database Properties dialog box. Notice that since there is no value in the Witness field, the High safety with automatic failover mode is unavailable.

All nodes should be able to access the resources in the cluster. The easiest way to verify this is to force a failover of the resources to another node: 1. Start Cluster Administrator. 2. In the left pane, expand Groups, right-click a cluster group, select the Move Group option, and finally select a node to move the resource group, as shown in Figure 5-126. If the failover is functioning properly, the owner of the resources will change to the new node name, as shown in Figure 5-127. 3. Repeat step 2 to move the resource to all other nodes of the server cluster.

In C++, it is possible to create a pointer to an element of a class that is not bound to a particular instance of a class. These are called pointers to members. Pointers to members are not really pointers per se. Rather, they are offsets within a class definition to a particular member, and when combined with a pointer to a class instance, they can be resolved to an actual member. Pointers to members turn out to be extremely powerful in several areas. Since pointers to members are not supported by the .NET Framework, they may only be used with native classes.

When a server cluster is working properly, only the node that owns the resource should have access to it. To verify that the disks cannot be accessed by any other node, perform the following steps: 1. Start Cluster Administrator. 2. For each resource group that contains a disk, go to that node, and make sure you can access it from Windows Explorer. 3. On all other nodes of the cluster that do not own the disk resource, start Windows Explorer, and try to access the disk. It should yield a result like the one in Figure 5-128. If you are able to access the disk from another node, your configuration is not correct, and you will have to troubleshoot. 4. Following the procedures in the previous Validating Resource Failover section, manually fail the disk resources to the other nodes, and repeat step 3.

Summary

Pointers to members are extremely useful in switching control between classes, which is important in native C++ programs that use callbacks. A callback is a mechanism where an address of a function, named a callback function, is passed to a second function for later invocation. In .NET, you can use delegates to perform callbacks; native C++ lacks delegates.
