The main problem with using database mirroring for a database in a clustered instance of SQL Server is that if you are using high-safety mode and have automatic failover set up for mirroring, it may wind up conflicting with the failover mechanism for the cluster. This is because if you have a failover of the instance, mirroring may detect the problem and then switch to have the mirror become the new main database and server. This behavior is not what most people want. You would in most cases want the failover of the instance to occur, and if the cluster itself fails, to then have mirroring pick up the slack. If this is what you want to achieve, you will have to set database mirroring to not allow an automatic switch to the mirror. Another aspect of configuration you will need to worry about is that when you are configuring your endpoints and one or both of the instances participating in database mirroring are configured as clusters, remember to use the clustered IP address and not one of the IP addresses from the nodes. If you are using name resolution, this will not apply but it is something to keep in mind. Figure 14-1 shows what this architecture may look like.
