When a rule condition or action references a field or a property, the rules engine can easily identify the dependencies that it uses to control forward chaining of rules. If a field or property is modified by an action, it identifies other rules that reference that same field or property in a condition. However, when a condition or action executes a method instead, the rules engine is not able to determine the dependencies without your help. For instance, a rule condition might execute a method named GetAccountStatus and use the result in an expression. Based on the method name, you and I might make an educated guess that the method returns a value that represents the account status. But the rules engine is incapable of making that same assumption. If another rule executes a method named ChangeAccountStatus, we might guess that it modifies the same value that is returned by the first method. But again, the rules engine can t make that connection without our assistance. WF provides a set of attributes that you can apply to methods (or properties) to solve this problem. Table 11-5 identifies the available attributes.

Zend_Layout comes into its own when you use its MVC component. This component includes a front controller plug-in and action helper, which tightly integrate the layout with the front controller. You start the Zend_Layout MVC by calling its static startMvc() method. You can pass this method an array of configuration options. At a minimum, I generally set the following: layout: This is the layout script to render. Note that Zend_Layout will add the .phtml extension to your name, so pass this option layout instead of layout.phtml. layoutPath: This is the path to the layout scripts.

Using the Stretch and TileMode properties provides many ways to paint an image onto a surface. Figure 7-15 shows what an image brush looks like for each of the possible Stretch values.

You place one or more of these attributes on a method or property to identify the referenced variables (fields or properties). For instance, you might place the RuleReadAttribute on the GetAccountStatus method mentioned previously to identify the underlying field that is being retrieved. The code would look like this: [RuleRead("accountStatus")] public int GetAccountStatus() { return this.accountStatus; } Now, when the GetAccountStatus method is referenced in a Rule, the dependency on the accountStatus field is clearly identified. If the field or property being referenced is on another object (instead of being defined directly in the workflow class), you modify the path provided to the attribute like this:

[RuleRead("Account/AccountStatus")] public int GetAccountStatus() { return this.Account.AccountStatus; } In like manner, the RuleWriteAttribute can be applied to methods (or properties) to identify the field or property that is being modified. For instance, the made up ChangeAccountStatus method might look like this after the RuleWriteAttribute has been added: [RuleWrite("Account/AccountStatus")] public void ChangeAccountStatus(int newStatus) { //code to validate and update Account.AccountStatus } The RuleReadAttribute and the RuleWriteAttribute can be used to identify a single field or property that is referenced, or you can specify wild cards. For example, this attribute indicates that all fields and properties of the Account object are modified: [RuleWrite("Account/*")]

Once you have started the Zend_Layout MVC, you can access the layout throughout your controller and view scripts: In the controllers, you access the instance using the controller plug-in: $this>_helper->layout. In the view, you use the view helper: $this->layout().

Supporting files can be anything the application needs to work, such as media files (images/ audio/video), data files, custom configuration files, and so on. These files can be embedded directly in the application assembly. Figure 13-8 shows the Properties pane in Visual Studio 2008 for an image file that was just added to the project.

When applying attributes, you can also specify the full name of the attribute. For example, RuleRead and RuleReadAttribute are synonymous.
