Figure 17-1: GFLAGS.EXE with settings for HEAPER.EXE Because I'm on the subject of GFLAGS.EXE, I want to take a moment to point out one very useful option, Show Loader Snaps. If you check that box and run your application, you'll see where Windows is loading the DLLs and how it's going about fixing up the imports, called snapping, for your application. If you need to see exactly what the Windows loader is doing when it loads your application (in case you have a problem), you'll find it helpful to turn on this option. For more information on loader snaps, see Matt Pietrek's "Under the Hood" column in the September 1999 Microsoft Systems Journal. Tricks for Hunting Down Memory Problems With a good understanding of the debugging memory systems available to you, I can now turn to tricks and techniques for finding those memory problems that occur only in production systems and don't easily show up in the debugger. Finding Uninitialized Memory Writes Nothing is worse than a crash that occurs out of nowhere and that doesn't seem to match up with any known code path. If you're experiencing these symptoms, you're probably looking at an uninitialized write, which is also known as a wild write. The cause is a pointer variable that hasn't been initialized and happens to be pointing to valid memory. You'll mostly see this with stack-based pointers, in other words, local variables. Since the stack is being changed all the time as your program is executing, there's no telling what that uninitialized pointer is pointing to, which is why it can appear to be random. 649

When my company is brought in to help track down one of these insidious problems, we invariably find a team that's at wits' end When we first meet with the team, someone will tell us that the team has literally tried every possible trick to find the problem Since they've already done "everything," they're desperate to see what magic we'll do to solve the problem My response is that we'll have to use the patented and trademarked Magic Ninja Uninitialized Memory Debugging Technique (MNUMDT) Everyone's sitting on the edge of his or her seat waiting for the trick especially when I mention that the MNUMDT works only if I have the two least experienced developers on the team work with me to find the bug.

Figure 5-3: The XmlLinkedNode class's NextSibling method lets applications navigate through the children of each node. Scrolling forward through the list of child nodes is fast and effective. The same can't be said for backward scrolling. The list of nodes is not double-linked, and each node doesn't also store a pointer to the previous one in the list. For this reason, PreviousSibling reaches the target node by walking through the list from the beginning to the node that precedes the current one. Tip To summarize, when you are processing XML subtrees, try to minimize calls to PreviousSibling, Item, and Count because they always walk through the entire collection of subnodes to get their expected output. Whenever possible, design your code to take advantage of forward-only movements and perform them using NextSibling.

By this point the two junior developers are champing at the bit to get going and show the rest of the team they can seriously carry their weight I have the two come around and stand by me as I spell out the MNUMDT: The two developers and I are each going to take one third of the code Each of us is going to read each line of code looking for any pointer declarations When we find a pointer declaration, we're going to initialize that pointer to NULL if the pointer isn't initialized in the declaration For each non-class memory allocation we find, we're going to add a call to memset or ZeroMemory after that call to zero out the memory When we find a deallocation, we'll initialize the pointer value back to zero after the deallocation.

Some Microsoft teams also include some or all BVTs in a rolling build and automatically report the results to the team. Teams that conduct several rolling builds each day often pick one for example, the last successful build before 13:00 and conduct additional testing and configuration on that build before releasing it to the team as the daily build. Another method of preventing build breaks and increasing code quality is the use of a check-in system. Years ago, when developers had changes to check in to SCM, they would check the code directly into the main source tree. Any mistakes they made either syntax errors or bugs would immediately affect every build. You can get away with a system like this for small projects, but for larger software projects, a staged check-in can be quite beneficial. Figure 12-5 shows the basic architecture of a check-in system. Instead of checking the code directly into the main SCM, when programmers are ready to submit changes, they submit them to an interim system. At a minimum, the interim computer verifies that the code builds correctly on at least one platform, and then submits the code on behalf of the programmer to the main source control system. Most such systems build for multiple configurations and targets something that is nearly impossible for a single developer to do on her own.

When we encounter a memset, or string copy operation, we're going to verify that each operation properly calculates the memory block size Each class member variable is initialized in the constructor(s) When I get through the MNUMDT list, the two developers are ready to run out of the room, but because I have them stand next to me, I can grab them and prevent it If you're thinking that this sounds like a lot of grunt work and a brute force approach, you're exactly right that's what it is Having looked for thousands of uninitialized memory bugs now, I've found that no amount of fancy debugging will get you close All you'll end up doing is wasting a ton of time It's much more efficient to go through and follow the steps I just outlined before starting the debugging.

Table 5-5: Methods of the XmlNode Class Method Description AppendChild Adds the specified node to the list of children of the current node. The node is inserted at the bottom of the list. Clone Creates a duplicate of the current node. For element nodes, duplication includes child nodes and attributes. Creates a duplicate of the current node. Takes a Boolean argument indicating whether cloning should proceed recursively. If this argument is true, calling the CloneNode method is equivalent to calling Clone. Entity and notation nodes can't be cloned. Returns an internal and node-specific object that implements the IEnumerator interface. The returned object provides the support needed to arrange for-each iterations. 180

The odds are extremely high that one of those pointers we initialize will be the one with the problem Now, instead of corrupting memory and continuing to run, the application will crash immediately because it's trying to write to NULL Some of you might think this won't work, but I can give you hundreds of instances where teams have spent weeks looking for the problem and didn't get anywhere However, when we were brought in, we were able to find the problem in a day or two Sometimes developers try to outsmart themselves because they don't want to think about brute force However, brute force is an excellent technique in this case.

Figure 12-5: Check-in system architecture. The interim system (sometimes referred to as a gauntlet or gatekeeper) will also typically run a selection of automated tests against the change to watch for regressions. Depending on the implementation of the system, the set of tests can be static, can be selectable by the programmer at the time of submission, or is created dynamically based on which parts of the code are changed.

Table 5-5: Methods of the XmlNode Class Method Description Returns the closest xmlns declaration for the GetNamespaceOfPrefix given prefix. Returns the closest xmlns declaration for the GetPrefixOfNamespace given namespace URI. Inserts the specified node immediately after the InsertAfter specified node. If the node already exists, it is first removed. If the reference node is null, the insertion occurs at the beginning of the list. Inserts the specified node immediately before the InsertBefore specified reference node. If the node already exists, it is first removed. If the reference node is null, the insertion occurs at the bottom of the list. Ensures that there are no adjacent XmlText Normalize nodes by merging all adjacent text nodes into a single one according to a series of precedence rules. PrependChild Adds the specified node to the beginning of the list of children of the current node. RemoveAll RemoveChild ReplaceChild SelectNodes SelectSingleNode Supports WriteContentTo Removes all the children of the current node, including attributes. Removes the specified child node. Replaces the specified child node with a new one. Returns a list (XmlNodeList) of all the nodes that match a given XPath expression. Returns only the first node that matches the given XPath expression. Verifies whether the current XmlImplementation object supports a specific feature. Saves all the children of the current node to the specified XmlWriter object. Equivalent to InnerXml. Saves the entire current node to the specified writer. Equivalent to OuterXml.

If you're wondering why I ask for the two junior developers on the team, I've found that they don't make as many assumptions as senior developers and with the eyes of the whole team on them, they are super-conscientious about the work they do grinding through the code Finding Memory Overruns Between the DCRT and tools like Compuware's BoundsChecker, you should have scrubbed out all the memory overruns in your application as part of your testing Sadly, not everyone is testing to the level that readers of this book are, and you'll have to find those pesky overruns in those developers' code Additionally, some of the memory overruns occur only under the most stressful production situations To make matters worse, when a release build application overruns memory, there's no slop space on the end of the memory block, 650.
