Executing BalanceAdjustmentWorkflow Revised Account: 101, Name=Neil Armstrong, Bal=$75.00 Completed BalanceAdjustmentWorkflow Press any key to exit Using the CallExternalMethodActivity is the simplest way to call a local service method. It allows you to easily bind the method parameters to workflow properties or those of another activity. And it accomplishes this with zero code. Use CallExternalMethodActivity when the method call is isolated and not part of a larger sequence of calls. A custom activity might make more sense if you have a series of related methods to call on the same service and wish to encapsulate them all into a single activity.

Now you should be able to test the site search. First go to http://localhost/search/build to rebuild the search index. Enter a search term (or terms) in the search form and click Submit Search. You should see something like Figure 9-1.

Figure 5-1. TwoWay data binding example In the top half, the user interface elements (in this case, text boxes) are bound to the data source. Any changes made to these text boxes are reflected in the data source. You can verify this by clicking Show Data Source Contents after modifying a value. The lower half lets you change the data source directly. When you click Update Data Source, the values in the data source will be updated directly and the corresponding fields in the top half will automatically change. The following XAML shows how this user interface is put together and how the Binding markup extension is used on several of the user interface elements. <Border BorderBrush="Black" BorderThickness="2" Grid.Row="1"> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical"> <TextBlock Text="User Interface" FontSize="16" HorizontalAlignment="Center"/> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" HorizontalAlignment="Center"> <TextBlock Text=" Name:"/> <TextBox x:Name="nameTextBox" Text="{Binding Name, Mode=TwoWay}" Width="140"/> </StackPanel> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" HorizontalAlignment="Center"> <TextBlock Text="E-Mail:"/> <TextBox x:Name="emailTextBox" Width="140" Text="{Binding EmailAddress, Mode=TwoWay}"/> </StackPanel> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" HorizontalAlignment="Center"> <TextBlock Text="Signature Line:"/> <TextBox x:Name="signatureTextBox" Width="140" /> </StackPanel> <Button x:Name="viewDataSourceButton" Margin="5" Width="155" Content="Show Data Source Contents" Click="viewDataSourceButton_Click"/> </StackPanel> </Border>

In this chapter, you saw how to implement and use local services. Unlike core services, local services can serve any purpose that you define. An example local service was implemented and then used by workflow instances. A local service must be loaded into the workflow runtime in order to use it. Loading of local services can be accomplished via code or from entries in an application configuration file. Both ways to load services were demonstrated in this chapter. Three different ways were demonstrated to access and use local services from a workflow. First, a local service was used directly from code in the workflow class. Then a custom activity was developed that used the same local service. Finally, the standard CallExternalMethodActivity that is provided with WF was used to invoke a method on the same local service. The next chapter discusses the second half of the local service story: events.

vent-driven activities suspend execution of a workflow until an event is received The event is commonly raised externally by a local service, but it can also be raised internally from within a workflow These types of activities are vital to state machine workflows, since they are typically used to trigger state transitions But they are also a valuable tool for sequential workflows The previous chapter began the discussion of local services It covered the steps needed to implement a local service and then call a method on the service from a workflow This chapter completes the local services story It shows you how to implement and raise events in a local service and then handle them within a workflow.
