Diagnosis and treatment can be especially challenging since elders are less likely to report depressive symptoms while being more likely to report somatic problems (King & Markus, 2000). Since depressive symptoms are more likely to be reported and experienced as somatic in origin and since physicians, family members, and others expect somatic complaints to increase with aging, frequently a depression diagnosis and possible treatment is not pursued by either the elder or those working and living with them. Depression among the elderly is often associated with bereavement, comorbid medical problems, and medication side effects (King & Markus, 2000). Geropsychologists must be able to diagnosis and treat depression among elders as well as consult with physicians, other health care professionals, and family members in order to help develop and implement a biopsychosocial strategy to best help the depressed elder.
