Since there is only one input block, the News Reader selects the RSS block as the default input for all of the source fields for each input. Selecting one of the value list boxes reveals many data fields that are passed by the RSS block. The News Reader, however, has fields for the title, publication date, description, and link. The News Reader block recognizes those fields and automatically selects defaults values for them. I will go over more of how blocks define and recognize data in 5.

Try to show the different working modes in other ways, too: change the mouse pointer, change the appearance of handles for the objects being processed, or simply change the background color. Just showing a small three-letter code on the status bar is a good way to confuse just about any user.

When the IMAP server sees that a message is multipart, or when it examines one of the parts of the message that it discovers is itself multipart (see 12 for more information about how MIME messages can nest other MIME messages inside them), then the tuple it returns will begin with a list of sub-structures, which are each a tuple laid out just like the outer structure. Then it will finish with some information about the multipart container that bound those sections together: ([(...), (...)], "MIXED", ('BOUNDARY', '=-=-='), None, None) The value "MIXED" indicates exactly what kind of multipart container is being represented in this case, the full type is multipart/mixed. Other common multipart subtypes besides mixed are alternative, digest, and parallel. The remaining items beyond the multipart type are optional, but if present, provide a set of name-value parameters (here indicating what the MIME multipart boundary string was), the multipart s disposition, its language, and its location (typically given by a URL).

When the user is faced with a multitude of options, a wizard can help by presenting the options in a logical order and provide extra support in the form of explanatory text for each option. According to Qt, a wizard is a QWidgetStack containing all the pages; QPushButton widgets for the Next, Previous, and Cancel buttons; and a QDialog for keeping all the components. Each page is a QWidget in itself that can contain other widgets for settings. A QWidgetStack is a special widget that can hold other widgets. These widgets are kept in a stack (as in a stack of cards), in which only the current widget is visible. This makes it possible to move forward and backward through the pages by simply changing the current widget of the stack. The best tool for designing a wizard is Qt Designer, but to show the concept I ll show you a hand-coded version. Its first page is shown in Figure 9-13.
