The output current is then further applied to mix 5 so that it can be mixed with the LO frequency of this mixer running at the VCO frequency. The overall unconverted current at 1.5 times the VCO frequency is converted into a voltage at the output of the mixer. Signals at 1.5Fvco Fafc are therefore generated at the output of this mixer. The basic idea of a stacked mixer is also applicable to the design of superheterodyne receivers and transmitters if no other signal processing (e.g., gain, filtering) is required at the intermediate stage.
