Secondly, there are approaches speci cally developed for understanding IS failures. The third type covers approaches concerned with failures in general, regardless of whether they occur during the project phase, at implementation or within a well-established situation. As with project management approaches, not all of these are particularly applicable to the IS domain, but some are. This chapter is not designed to provide an exhaustive survey of all the approaches, methods and techniques that can be used to gain understanding of information system failure, but it will cover at least one example of each of the three types identi ed above.
