Sites are Active Directory objects that are used to manage directory replication and service localization. To configure a site, you must create a site object and associate a subnet object with the site. A site can have more than one subnet, but a subnet can belong to only one site. Domain controllers are placed in sites as server objects. Domain controllers register service locator (SRV) records to advertise their Kerberos (authentication) and directory access services. These SRV records are created in sitespecific nodes within the DNS zones for the domain and forest. Domain members discover their site during authentication. A domain controller uses a client s IP address and the domain s site and subnet information to determine the client s site and then sends that information to the client.

Naturally, it is important that this information remains confidential. You can, in theory, store user credentials anywhere. You could even create static arrays of strings containing user names and passwords in your code, though it wouldn t be secure or manageable. More likely, you will want to store user credentials in a back-end database such as Microsoft SQL Server. The way the user credentials are stored determines how difficult it is for an attacker to misuse the information and whether those user credentials can be migrated to a new authentication system in the future. Never store passwords in an unencrypted form. You can use encryption to protect your stored passwords in two ways: hashing or reversible encryption. The trade-off between hashing and encryption is straightforward. If you store users passwords in a hashed form, they are just as useful for validating a user s credentials, but an attacker cannot easily identify the passwords, even when the attacker gains access to the data. However, storing passwords in a hashed form prevents administrators from migrating those passwords to a different system in the future. If you store passwords in a reversibly encrypted format, your users can unencrypt those passwords to migrate them to a new system. However, an attacker who gains access to the encryption key and the encrypted passwords can easily determine the unencrypted passwords.
