Two studies conducted on a large sample of French youth (Peretti-Watel, Beck, & Legleye, 2002; Peretti-Watel & Lorent, 2004) showed that those who participated in sport were less likely to use cannabis than those who did not participate. Finally, two large studies of Swiss adolescents (Ferron, Narring, Cauderay, & Michaud, 1999; Stronski, Ireland, Michaud, Narring, & Resnick, 2000) found that participation in sport was associated with less likelihood of lifetime marijuana use, and, among boys, participating in a sports club was associated with use of marijuana only rather than marijuana plus other illicit drugs.
