circuit model in short-circuit programs is closer to what is needed for harmonic flow analysis in networks In fact, prior to the advent of special power systems harmonic analysis tools, many analysts would use short-circuit programs to compute harmonic distortion, manually adjusting the impedances for frequency This is an interesting learning experience for the student, but not one that the practitioner will want to repeat often Of course, one could also perform the analysis in the time domain using electromagnetic transients programs, but this generally is more time-consuming and is excessive for most problems Today, most power system harmonics analysis is performed in the sinusoidal steady state using computer programs specially developed for the purpose It is encouraging to see many vendors of power system analysis software providing some harmonics analysis capabilities in their packages, although the main application in the package may be a power flow program It is useful to see how this has evolved Unlike power flow algorithms, few of the developers have written technical papers documenting their efforts Therefore, it is difficult to trace the history of harmonics analysis in power systems through the literature This book gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of several of the pioneers in this field, and this will help the reader understand the history behind some of the major computer tools available today Prior to the widespread use of computers for harmonics analysis, power systems harmonic studies were frequently performed on analog simulators such as a transient network analyzer (TNA) The few TNAs in the United States in the mid-1970s were located at large equipment manufacturers, primarily at General Electric Co, Westinghouse Electric, and McGraw-Edison Power Systems Because of the inconvenience and high cost, harmonic studies were generally performed only on very special cases such as large arc furnace installations that might impact utility transmission systems TNAs usually had at least two variable-frequency sources Therefore, the general procedure was to use one source for the power frequency and the second source to represent the nonlinear load, one frequency at a time One tricky part of this procedure was to sweep the frequency through system resonances fast enough to avoid burning up the power supply or damaging inductors and capacitors Our involvement in harmonics analysis began in 1975, when author Dugan, then with McGraw-Edison, constructed the first electronic arc model for a TNA to eliminate the need to use the second source4 In that same year, to overcome the limitations of harmonic analysis by analog simulator, Dugan teamed up with Dr Sarosh N Talukdar and William L Sponsler at McGraw-Edison to develop one of the first commercial computer programs specifically designed to automate analysis of harmonic flows on large-scale power systems Dubbed the Network.

There are elements of truth to each of these positions The intent in this book is not to take sides in this debate but to present the issues as fairly as possible while pointing out how to solve problems related to power quality 92 DG Technologies The emphasis of this chapter is on the power aspects of DG, and only a cursory description of the relevant issue with the technologies will be given Readers are referred to Refs 1 and 2 for more details Also, the Internet contains a multitude of resources on DG A word of caution: As with all things on the Internet, it is good to maintain a healthy skepticism of any material found there Proponents and marketers for particular technologies have a way of making things seem very attractive while neglecting to inform the reader of major pitfalls

The most commonly applied DG technology is the reciprocating enginegenerator set A typical unit is shown in Fig 93 This technology is generally the least expensive DG technology, often by a factor of 2 Reciprocating gas or diesel engines are mature technologies and are readily available Utilities currently favor mobile gensets mounted on trailers so that they can be moved to sites where they are needed A common application is to provide support for the transmission and distribution system in emergencies The units are placed in substations and interconnected to the grid through transformers that typically step up the voltage from the 480 V produced by the generators Manufacturers of these units have geared up production in recent years to meet demands to relieve severe grid constraints that have occurred in some areas One side effect of this is that the cost of the units has dropped, widening the cost gap between this technology and the next least costly option, which is generally some sort of combustion turbine Diesel gensets are quite popular with end users for backup power One of the disadvantages of this technology is high NOx and SOx emissions This severely limits the number of hours the units, particularly diesels, may operate each year to perhaps as few as 150 Thus, the main applications will be for peaking generation and emergency backup Natural gas fired engines produce fewer emissions and can generally be operated several thousand hours each year Thus, they are popular in combined heat and power cogeneration applications in schools, government, and commercial buildings where they operate at least for the business day
