In addition to publishing Exchange Server computers so they can be accessed using Outlook as a MAPI client, ISA Server can also be used to publish Exchange Server for clients such as Outlook Express. These clients use POP3 or IMAP4 to read messages in the Exchange Server mailboxes and use SMTP to send messages to the computers running Exchange Server. Alternatively, these clients can be configured to use the secure versions of these protocols: POP3S, IMAP4S, and SMTPS. You can use the New Mail Server Publishing Rule Wizard to create a new server publishing rule for Internet protocol clients. When running the wizard, choose to create a client access rule, and then choose IMAP4 or POP3 as the client access protocols. If no publishing rule is configured allowing access to an SMTP server, then you also need to configure the publishing rule to support SMTP. When you configure the publishing rule, you can choose to enable the POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP secure ports. If you choose to use secure ports, all user logon and message transfer traffic is encrypted using SSL. This means that you must have a server certificate configured on the computer running Exchange Server.

In an Active Directory domain, all domain controllers are equivalent. They are all capable of writing to the database and replicating changes to other domain controllers. However, in any multimaster replication topology, certain operations must be performed by one and only one system. In an Active Directory domain, operations masters are domain controllers that play a specific role. Other domain controllers are capable of playing the role but do not. This lesson will introduce you to the five operations masters found in Active Directory forests and domains. You will learn their purposes, how to identify the operations masters in your enterprise, and the nuances of administering and transferring roles.

If you configure access for multiple protocols using the New Mail Server Publishing Rule Wizard, the wizard automatically creates a server publishing rule for each protocol that you published.

After this lesson, you will be able to: Define the purpose of the five single master operations in Active Directory forests. Identify the domain controllers performing operations master roles. Plan the placement of operations master roles. Transfer and seize operations master roles. Estimated lesson time: 45 minutes

In this practice, you will configure ISA Server to publish the Exchange Server for Outlook RPC clients. You will then test the publishing rule.

In any replicated database, some changes must be performed by one and only one replica because they are impractical to perform in a multimaster fashion. Active Directory is no exception. A limited number of operations are not permitted to occur at different places at the same time and must be the responsibility of only one domain controller in a domain or forest. These operations, and the domain controllers that perform them, are referred to by a variety of terms:

Note To test the Outlook RPC publishing rule, you need a computer running the Outlook client that is located on the same network as the external network interface of the ISA Server computer. The client computer should be configured to use SERVER1 for DNS name resolution.

Operations masters Operations master roles Single master roles Operations tokens Flexible single master operations (FSMOs)

1. On the External client, log on as an Administrator. 2. Open Outlook from the Start menu. 3. On the Outlook 2003 Startup page, click Next. 4. On the E-mail Accounts page, click Next. 5. On the Server Type page, click Microsoft Exchange Server, and then click Next. 6. On the Exchange Server Settings page, in the Microsoft Exchange Server field, type Mail1.cohovineyard.com. In the User Name field, type the user name of a user with a mailbox on MAIL1, and then click Next.

Regardless of the term used, the idea is the same. One domain controller performs a function, and while it does, no other domain controller performs that function.
