Here, the Usage Record Provider is sometimes referred to as the Basic Usage Record Provider (BURP). The overall architecture of the recommendation-based discovery is shown in Figure 4.19. In the following, the process of recommendation-based service discovery is presented, starting from the components that collect data on the behaviour of the user and moving towards the components that provide recommendations using those models. Here, the Proactive Service Portal (see 7 for more information) is used as an example of a user interface that both gathers behavioural information and provides the user with recommendations. When the user activates a service in the user interface, the Portal constructs a usage record (see Section 4.3.3) and sends it to the Usage Record Provider. In this case, the usage record contains the category of the service. If needed, the Usage Record Provider queries the relevant Context Providers in order to complete the usage record with contextual information, and stores it in a database. The Recommender queries the Usage Record Provider, fetches the latest behavioural information, updates the user model, and stores the new model in the Pro le Manager.
