Let s start by creating a simple HTML page for our application. Tapestry page templates are regular HTML documents decorated with tags and attributes for Tapestry to replace dynamically at runtime. The initial template for our simple application is shown in Listing 7-1. Listing 7-1. Tapestry Time HTML Template (Home.html) <html> <body> <h1>Tapestry Time</h1> The current time is <span jwcid="time">high noon</span>! </body> </html> Save this page template as Home.html in the context directory. Like any good framework, Tapestry follows the convention-over-configuration philosophy. At start-up time Tapestry will look for a page named Home and render it. (You can override this default behavior, but this is an easy convention to follow, and most Tapestry applications do so it is easy to find an application main page easily.) The HTML document looks like any other HTML document. It is viable in any compliant Web browser and more importantly, editable in any WYSIWYG HTML editor such as HomeSite or Macromedia s Dreamweaver as shown in Figure 7-2.

In Rails, plugins are special libraries that add functionality to the Rails framework within the scope of the application they are installed under or the Rails application itself. The Rails application can then use the functionality added by the plugin. There are hundreds of Rails plugins, and the number is growing all the time as Rails developers come up with new ideas. You can get plugins to make it easy to create graphs from your application, to add tagging functionality to your code, and even to add large chunks of functionality, such as an entire authentication system, to your app. Installing a plugin is even easier than installing a gem. You use the script/plugin script, like so: ruby script/plugin install [url of plugin here]

As you have just seen, you can easily enable your application for out of browser support by simply checking one check box in your project properties. However, what if you would like to customize the installation experience for your application Luckily, Silverlight has made it very easy for developers to customize the title of their application, the shortcut names, and even the icons used in the installation experience. To customize your application s installation experience, in the project properties you will notice a button to the right of the check box for enabling out of browser support labeled Out-Of-Browser Settings. If you click that button, the Out-Of-Browser Settings dialog appears, as shown in Figure 16-10. In the following case, you have changed the title, the shortcut name, and you have provided a graphic for the 128 128 icon. Note that you have not provided graphics for the smaller icons, and as a result the 128 128 icon will simply be resized. This is fine for the purposes of this book, but in your applications you really should provide the smaller icons to obtain a crisper look.

Note Like with the RubyGems command-line tool, gem, the plugin script supports operations such as

Figure 7-2. Simple HTML page in a WYSIWYG editor In the Home.html template we use a span tag with an attribute jwcid attribute which stands for Java Web Component Id. There are two ways to declare Tapestry components in an HTML template: explicitly as shown in the example or implicitly by prefixing the component name with @. Implicit declarations are like anonymous inner classes in Java; you are declaring and using a component on the spot. Since we are using an explicit declaration, the meat and potatoes of the components must be defined somewhere else so that we can refer to it by name.

install, remove, and update to perform the relevant action upon the plugin. You can learn all about the various supported operations by running ruby script/plugin -h.

The URL for the plugins you want to install is provided by the author of that plugin on his or her web page, or wherever you learn about the plugin. Here s a demonstration of installing a plugin called acts_as_commentable: ruby script/plugin install http://juixe.com/svn/acts_as_commentable/ + + + + + + + + + ./CHANGELOG ./MIT-LICENSE ./README ./init.rb ./install.rb ./lib/acts_as_commentable.rb ./lib/comment.rb ./tasks/acts_as_commentable_tasks.rake ./test/acts_as_commentable_test.rb
