Description Delegations are used to help you manage different namespace sections better. For example, Microsoft might want to delegate different sections of its namespace, notably the MSDN or TechNet sections of Microsoft.com, to have them administered by other divisions in the company. When managing DNS namespaces in AD DS, you must delegate new domain-based zones when you create the domain; otherwise, the zone will be managed at the forest level and not at the domain level as it should be. In Windows Server 2003, this delegation had to be created manually before creating the domain. In Windows Server 2008, the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard will perform the delegation automatically when you create a child domain. Scavenging scours the DNS server to remove stale or outdated records whose age has gone beyond their TTL value. Zone scavenging applies when scavenging is applied to a single zone as opposed to the entire server. These are the transactions DNS servers use to replicate information from one server to another. Full zone transfers transfer the entire content of a zone to one or more other DNS servers. Incremental transfers send only a subset of the data. Traditionally, full transfers are referred to as Asynchronous Full Transfer (AXFR) whereas incremental transfers are dubbed Incremental Zone Transfer (IXFR). Windows Server 2008 also supports secure zone transfers, which are performed through AD DS multimaster replication.

Whether you define custom IIdentity and IPrincipal interfaces or use GenericIdentity and GenericPrincipal, you can take advantage of the same declarative and imperative RBS techniques used for WindowsIdentity and WindowsPrincipal. To do this, perform the following steps in your application: 1. If not using GenericIdentity and GenericPrincipal, override the IIdentity and IPrincipal interfaces. 2. Create an IIdentity object representing the current user. 3. Create an IPrincipal object based on your IIdentity object. 4. Use or import the System.Threading namespace, and set the Thread.CurrentPrincipal property to your IPrincipal object. 5. Add any declarative or imperative RBS demands required. The following console application performs all these steps to demonstrate how to use declarative RBS demands with the GenericIdentity and GenericPrincipal classes. In this example, only members of the IT role might run the TestSecurity method. Two identities and principals are created. The object myUser1, with the user name AHankin, is a member of the IT role and should be able to run the method. The object myUser2, with the user name TAdams, is not a member of that role.

By default, Web publishing rules and secure Web publishing rules grant access to the All Users user set, which includes anonymous, or unauthenticated, users. To limit access to a Web publishing rule, remove the All Users user set and add the All Authenticated Users or a specific user set.

The Windows Server 2008 DNS service supports three zone types, as shown in Figure 9-6:

When designing an authentication strategy for ISA Server Web publishing rules, you have several options. You can configure ISA Server to perform the authentication, or you can configure the published server to perform the authentication. In some cases, you may want to require authentication on both ISA Server and the published server.

Primary Zone Zones that can be integrated with AD DS or that can be of the former,

In some cases, you may want users to authenticate before they reach the internal network. To enable this, you can configure the Web listener associated with the publishing rule to require authentication. Once the users authenticate with ISA Server, they can then access the Web server on the internal network. This is a secure configuration because if users cannot successfully authenticate with ISA Server, they cannot access anything on the internal network. Use ISA Server authentication if you have fairly simple authentication requirements. For example, if you want to ensure that only authenticated users can access all your published Web servers, then configure the Web listener to allow access to the All Authenticated Users user set. This option also has the added benefit of offloading authentication activity to the ISA Server computer.
