Ask yourself questions about how the program should work. You might answer those questions, or they might lead to more questions. If something is confusing, ask questions. If the source code is available, refer to the code and, if necessary, ask more questions. Exploratory testing, the act of testing and designing tests at the same time, can significantly influence test design and is a beneficial part of the overall test design process. If you are testing a feature or type of application you haven't tested before, or even if you are just stuck testing something that is familiar to you, it can be useful to ask someone else who has tested something similar for ideas. Many bugs in software are missed during testing because testers didn't ask enough questions or they didn't ask the right questions. Test design requires a comprehensive and careful examination of the software under test. Asking questions is one of the best ways to gain the knowledge needed to carry out this examination.
