Because it allows for the most control over its settings, the most appropriate type of connector is Custom. After we define the name and purpose of the new connector, the next step is to configure local network settings (Figure 13-10). These control the IP addresses and ports that the connector will monitor for incoming messages. The default values are to monitor all available IP addresses assigned to the server and to use port 25, which are suitable for our purposes. We can also define the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) that the connector will advertise to other servers. The default value is the FQDN of the hub transport server that hosts the connector, but we can change this to something like mailexchange.contoso.com if we prefer to use a more illustrative name. Of course, we ll need to define an IP address in the Domain Name System (DNS) to resolve this name before the remote servers can connect.

The final step is to tell Exchange the IP addresses of remote servers from which the connector will accept messages. The default is to allow all possible IP addresses (from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255), meaning that any server can connect. Remote servers can also mean POP3 and IMAP4 clients that submit messages via SMTP. For instance, if you want to create a receive connector to send messages on behalf of a set of POP3 and IMAP4 clients, you can specify the range of IP addresses used by the clients to ensure that only these clients can connect to relay their outbound messages. To complete the picture, when creating the receive connector, you d set it to be of type Client to ensure that Exchange selects the right permissions to allow the clients to connect.
