Microsoft decided that it was best if administrators took a deliberate step to configure connectors if they wanted to support anonymous connections on hub transport servers and this is how Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 operate. Remember that receive connectors are scoped to a single server, so if you apply this change to the default receive connector on one hub transport server, you should apply it to all the hub transport servers that are active across the organization. If you don t configure a receive connector to allow anonymous connections, users who send messages from the other email systems will receive nondelivery notifications with an error code of 5.7.1, which means that the sending server was unable to authenticate itself and so the connection was terminated by the hub transport server. If some hub transport servers allow anonymous connections and others don t, you can find yourself in a situation where messages presented at one connector will be accepted whereas they will fail if routed to another connector an unacceptable situation for a messaging system. Figure 13-8 shows the nondelivery notification generated by an Exchange 2010 organization for a message that it couldn t deliver to a user in another Exchange 2010 organization. In this case, the essential clue is the 5.7.1 Client Was Not Authenticated line in the diagnostic information at the bottom of the message.

Updating the default receive connector to allow anonymous connections is the easy solution to the problem of accepting incoming messages from external SMTP servers . However, this approach means that you use the same configuration for internal and external messages . You might want to treat external messages differently; for instance, you might allow users to send 10 MB messages internally but want to restrict incoming messages to 5 MB . In this circumstance, it is best practice to create one or more dedicated receive connectors to process intranet SMTP traffic and then customize these connectors with appropriate message size limits and to allow anonymous connections . You can then direct internal SMTP traffic for the Exchange organization to the servers that host the receive connectors .

Before you create a new receive connector, you need to understand why it is required and what additional functionality it will provide to the organization over and above that available through the default receive connectors that Exchange creates on all hub transport servers. The questions that you might ask include the following:

1. What hub transport server will host the new connector 2. What function does the new connector serve Will it connect two internal Exchange

organizations, handle other internal SMTP traffic, connect Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2003, or have another use

Once these answers are clear, you can proceed to the Server Configuration section of EMC. Select the Hub Transport node, then the server that will host the new connector, and then select the New Receive Connector option. EMC launches the New Receive Connector Wizard and asks you to name the new connector and select its purpose from a drop-down list (Figure 13-9).
