How do you measure CPU pressure for a SQL Server system While classic Performance Monitor counters such as Processor:% Processor Time and System:Processor Queue Length provide a general overview, they are insufficient on their own to use in forming the correct conclusion For that, we need to look a little further, with signal waits a critical consideration SIGNAL WAITS Earlier in the chapter, we looked at how SQLOS uses schedulers (figure 172) in allocating CPU time with processes (SPIDs) moving between three states: running, suspended, and runnable There can be only a single SPID in the running status of a given scheduler at any one time, with the runnable queue containing SPIDs that are ready to run.
