The drug shows no analgesic activity in any test systems, in contrast to the allyl derivatives of the morphine, benzomorphan, or for that matter benzazocine series. Administration of this potent antagonist quickly reverses the actions of opiates; it will in consequence precipitate withdrawal symptoms when administered to addicted individuals. Naloxone is, however, not active when taken by mouth. It had thus been proposed to combine the drug with methadone.
