The information architecture principle described in 1 supports the concept of a data abstraction layer. The principle claims that data must be made available both now and in the future. If the database is intended to survive into the future, and many databases long outlive their original application UI, then the database must be extensible. The best way to ensure extensibility is with a data abstraction layer. Pundits find it trendy to claim that client server or n-tier database architectures don t work, and that the answer is service-oriented architecture (SOA). I don t believe that s always true. Building databases without enforcing a data abstraction layer didn t work, but client-server, n-tier, or SOA architectures can work if the design includes a data abstraction layer. The data abstraction layer can physically exist in either the database, using stored procedures, views and functions, or in an application layer, using .NET and ADO. Don t mix the two, however. Personally, I prefer building the data abstraction layer within the database for two reasons: First, this places the data validation code and any lookups as close to the data as possible. Second, it ensures that no foreign code can bypass the data abstraction layer and access the data. However, I understand that others disagree and that s OK, so long as there is a data abstraction layer. Generally speaking, the data abstraction layer will need an interface for each of the following tasks: Inserting data Updating data Deleting data Fetching single rows and lists for every user-recognizable object

In addition to these features, there are other types of features that create reference geometry (such as curves, planes, and axes, surface features (covered in 27), and specialty features for techniques like weldments ( 31), plastics/mold tools ( 32), and sheet metal (s 29 & 30).

where ave{ denotes the average taken over the sample. A necessary condition for a maximum is that (8.29) remains stationary under infinitesimal variations o f t and V. So we let t and V depend differentiably on a dummy parameter and take the derivative (denoted by a superscribed dot). We obtain the condition

The performance measures and design rules for convolutional codes are quite similar to those of block codes. As a matter of fact, the mathematical description given above for block codes with soft decoding can directly be applied to convolutional codes. Thus, we nd that the Euclidean distance of the code is no longer an important metric. Rather, we strive to nd goals with good minimum (Hamming) distance properties. If the code sequences differ in many positions, then the probability is small that all of the distinguishing bits are in a fading dip simultaneously. Expressed in other words: we wish that two sequences that can be confused with each other (i.e., start and end in the same state of the trellis) are as long as possible. The minimum length of such sequences is often called the effective length of the code. From these simple considerations, we can derive a few rules about code design for at-fading channels: The minimal Euclidean distance does not occur in the equations for the BER. Thus, the design criteria for AWGN channels and fading channels are quite different. Since Rayleigh fading and AWGN channels are only limiting cases of the Rician channels that are practically important, it is important to nd codes that work in both of these channel types. The most important parameter in the fading channel is effective length, which enters exponentially into the BER.
