Just as mysteriously as they lock up, they sometimes unlock and start responding to client requests after a period of time. This can occur on any platform or operating system. If a system is hung, it will stop responding on all heartbeat channels: serial lines, shared-disk based heartbeats, private Ethernet networks, and so on. It does not matter how many heartbeat communication media have been set up. If node A in a two-node cluster (node A and node B) is hung, node B will get no heartbeat response and conclude that node A has gone down. Node B will commence to mount the file systems and start the database and other services formerly served by node A. Subsequently node A could unlock and start I/O to the file systems. This results in a situation where two systems are simultaneously accessing and modifying the same file system, thus creating dataintegrity problems. How cluster software handles a system hang is a decisive test. Some software will not take over services running on a system that suddenly stops responding on all heartbeat channels. If a system does take over services of a hung system, it must ensure that the failed system cannot access the shared disks if it were to mysteriously come back. This is done by I/O fencing, exclusive disk reservations, and I/O barriers.
