You can solve most concurrency issues by restricting data access to one thread at a time. A lock, or mutex (from mutually exclusive ), is the way you make your threads take turns. A lock has two states: acquired and released. A thread must acquire the lock before it is allowed to access the data. When the thread is done, it releases the lock.
